Two Years, Two Promises

The NDA government, which came to power under the leadership of Narendra Modi completed two years of its tenure. During the election campaigns two promises were also made, ‘acche din’ (good days) and ‘Congress mukt bharat‘ (Congress free India). Let’s see what progress has been made on these promises in the two years.

Whether ‘acche din’ have come or not, is purely subjective and comparative. There certainly have been growth in the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and the number of jobs. Though there are certain promises that have been fulfilled in GDP growth, the promise to increase employment hasn’t seen much of the same. The Prime Minister’s pet project, Make in India is a step in the right direction and the government can be appreciated for its efforts, but it has made very little impact. Many would say that we must wait and watch and others say that the government has been ineffective, both sides are correct in their own perspectives but right now, all we can do is wait and watch.

The second promise, has seen the most progress unfortunately. The promise of ‘Congress mukt bharat’ (Congress free India) has seen immense progress with the party moving from one defeat to another in the upcoming elections along with complete disarray in the leadership, they just don’t have any one in the party who is capable of leading them without coming under constant bombardment from the NDA and other parties. Certainly the party is in confusion and no one really knows what is going on in the party.

It is very clear that, BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party) is making more progress in the latter promise and it is disappointing to see that a party who originally set out on its election campaign with prime focus on development and welfare of the people, is concentrating more on its vendetta. Yes, the government has made considerable efforts on the international forum, creating new relationships, friendlier relationships with other countries and there is no denying that but the people,  ‘aam admi‘ (common man) who sits in a village doesn’t understand this. Without making considerable efforts to show the benefits of these manoeuvres to the common man, 2019 will be a lost cause for them.
